Cape Town – Profit margins in South Africa’s construction industry declined from a high of 4% in 2007 to 2.9% in 2014, Statistician General Pali Lehohla said on Monday.
Statistics SA has released reports on the performance of the
manufacturing
and construction industries for the year 2014. The reports present
information on income generated by enterprises in the sector, as well as
profit margins, employment and expenditure.
Income from the construction industry increased by 13.4% from 2011 to 2014, totalling R392.3bn. Large increases amounting to R46.8bn were recorded from the subsector responsible for constructing civil engineering structures, followed by building construction at R26.6bn.
Employment in the construction industry declined from a high of 541 000 in 2007 to a low of 485 000 in 2011, before recovering slightly to 502 000 in 2014. Job growth took place in construction and civil engineering structures, which showed an increase of 45 000 people employed.
The province that showed the largest income from the sale of goods and services in the construction industry was Gauteng, which represented 38.3% of the industry total. This was followed by the Western Cape with 14.6% of the industry total with Mpumalanga in third place, recording 12% of the industry total.
