Changing of the guard as Gigaba makes his way to 'occupied' Treasury

Cape Town – Newly appointed Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba will meet Treasury’s executive committee in Pretoria at 15:30 on Friday.

His arrival at Treasury will occur while protestors remain outside the premises to voice their concern with Pravin Gordhan's removal as minister.

Gigaba’s spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said the Finance Minister-designate “is humbled by the opportunity extended to him to serve the country and the people of South Africa as Minister of Finance”.

“He has had discussions with his predecessor, Mr Pravin Gordhan, and they have agreed to a meeting soon.

“The minister-designate has met with the National Treasury director-general and has therefore been briefed on pertinent and most urgent issues.”

Gigaba will hold a media briefing on Saturday at 11:00.

Gordhan earlier said farewell to staff at his headquarters in the old Reserve Bank building in Pretoria. Staff sang ‘Senzenina’ (what have we done?) as the two entered the building and were later heard singing the national anthem.

Gordhan and Jonas then greeted protestors in Church Square from Save SA and Zwelinzima Vavi-led South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu), where Gordhan said: “It is the involvement and awareness amongst the public that will ensure that we enrich our democracy and strengthen our institutions.”

Jonas added: “This is a very significant message that I send you in welcoming this demonstration. We encourage you to continue to become activist citizens.”

Former finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his former deputy Mcebisi Jonas addressing protestors outside their offices in Pretoria on Friday.

They then held an hour-long press conference, where they opened up on the controversial reasons why they were removed from their posts and told South Africa to join the dots regarding corruption and state capture.

After one further speech to the Save SA and Saftu protestors, Jonas and Gordhan returned to their offices to pack up their belongings before they officially leave.

The protestors vowed to occupy the space outside around Treasury until their concerns are heard.

Treasury's exco is headed by director general Lungisa Fuzile and comprises the following deputy director generals:

  • Anthony Julies (head of assets and liability management)
  • Michael Sachs (Budget office)
  • Stadi Mngomezulu (corporate services)
  • Monale Ratsoma (economic policy)
  • Malijeng Ngqaleni (intergovernmental relations)
  • Monale Ratsoma (international and regional economic policy)
  • Jayce Nair (acting accountant-general)
  • Schalk Human (acting chief procurement officer)
  • Dondo Mogajane (public finance)
  • Ismail Momoniat (tax and financial sector policy)

Gordhan and Jonas called on the newly elected leaders of Treasury to respect and follow the advice of the above leaders, some of whom have been at Treasury since it was formed.
