Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma will make an announcement on relief for damage caused by the recent flooding in seven provinces in his state of the nation address, according to Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.
Speaking at a post-cabinet press conference on Thursday, Chabane said the cabinet had received a report on flood damage and that this was being examined by the inter-ministerial task team and its accounting officers to determine payouts.
"The president will state in his speech just how relief will be handled," he said.
The state of the nation address is to take place in the evening of Thursday February 10.
The cabinet said the National Disaster Management Centre, located at the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, was monitoring the situation countrywide and that the National Joint Operations Centre had been activated to coordinate the response by the security cluster.
The Government Communications and Information Service will provide information around the clock.
Two weeks ago, at a media briefing by the department of social security, an official said damage to infrastructure caused by the flooding could amount to as much as R160bn, but an accurate assessment would only be made once the waters had subsided.
The department of agriculture has already said it will not compensate farmers for flood damage, but was willing to supply seed to replant crops.
