Johannesburg - The SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) expects President Jacob Zuma to restore business confidence in his State of the Nation address, CEO Neren Rau said on Wednesday.

"Recent events have portrayed South Africa in a less than favourable light and there is an urgent need for the state president to restore both domestic and international business confidence through the Sona [State of the Nation address]."

The chamber expected Zuma to give reassurance to foreign and domestic investors on economic stability, specifically relating to concerns over illegal protests, management of government expenditure, and problematic mining legislation.

The chamber also wanted a strong call for labour to exercise their right to strike in a disciplined and legal manner.

He said Sacci hoped the address was underpinned by themes of promoting business confidence, a reduction in state intervention in the economy, and a commitment to greater policy certainty.

President Jacob Zuma would deliver his speech on Thursday at 19:00.
