Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma took part in a one-day summit of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) in Gaborone on Friday which added two priority areas to those agreed in 2011.
The gradual re-invigoration of SACU is part of moves to strengthen regional integration and bolster intra-African trade. SACU is the oldest customs union in the world and groups Botswana‚ Lesotho‚ Namibia and Swaziland with South Africa‚ the economic giant of southern Africa.
A final communique on Friday said the summit added trade in services and strengthening the SACU secretariat to the five existing priority areas: regional industrial development policy‚ an ongoing review of revenue-sharing‚ trade facilitation‚ developing SACU institutions and unifying the Union's trade negotiations.
Construction of SACU headquarters in Windhoek is due to be completed by November this year‚ the communique said.
President Ian Khama of Botswana chaired the summit which was also attended by Prime Minister Thomas Thabane of Lesotho‚ President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia and King Mswati III of Swaziland.
