Johannesburg - The salaries of teachers and health professionals are being reviewed, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.
"A commission has been established to review the remuneration... The commission is headed by former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo," Zuma said at the SA Democratic Teachers' Union Congress in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.
"He will be looking at the conditions of the public service and report back."
Zuma urged delegates to focus on the unity of Sadtu, which is an affiliate of the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu).
He said there had been problems but it had survived. Cosatu had also been in the eye of the "storm", he said.
Zuma added that unity is necessary to build South Africa.
The Presidency said on Thursday that Zuma appointed additional members to the commission.
Dr Vincent Maphai and Ms Elizabeth Maepa will join Ngcobo to investigate remuneration and conditions of service in the public service, with the remuneration of educators receiving priority attention.
