Harare - Zimbabwe’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) recorded a turnover of $7.4bn in 2012, a survey has shown.
The aim of the FinScope MSME Zimbabwe survey was to asses the size and scope of Zimbabwe's MSMEs.
The survey, seen by Fin24, estimates turnover for MSMEs in Zimbabwe at $7.4bn.
Of the turnover, the bulk of $3.3bn came from retail businesses, $1.9bn from agriculture-related businesses and $564 000 from manufacturers.
Individual entrepreneurs accounted for $3.1bn, with micro businesses at the identical figure.
Small enterprises had $1.2bn while medium enterprises had $30.6m.
Zimbabwe's MSMEs had 2.8 million owners in 2012, compared with the South Africa's 5.6 million MSME owners in 2010. In Malawi the sector had 760 000 owners in 2012.
Worrying though for the sector is that 43% or 1.2 million of the owners are not banked. The survey termed these financially excluded.
In South Africa in 2010, 42% of MSME owners were financially excluded. The figure was at 59% in Malawi in 2012.
FinScope MSME surveys have been conducted in Zambia (2009), South Africa (2010), Tanzania (2010) and Malawi (2012). The survey is currently under way in Mozambique.
It Zimbabwe it was sponsored by the World Bank, and launched by President Robert Mugabe on June 19 2013.
