Harare - The Zimbabwean government says it has shortlisted two companies for the establishment of a platinum refinery in the country.
According to a report by local news agency Financial Express, the two companies were shortlisted out of nine submissions made by players in the platinum industry.
Speaking in an interview, Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa said government will in the next few days announce the winning bidder.
“We have shortlisted players in the industry from nine, we are now down to two, I am still battling to see which one of the two we will engage. In the next few days I should be telling you who we are going to work with, in the establishment of a platinum refinery,” he said.
This comes after government gave an ultimatum to players in the sector to submit proposals for the development of a platinum refinery plant that will enable local value addition and beneficiation of the precious metal.
Chidhakwa said the government considered a number of factors in assessing the proposals, which include the financial viability of the project and its social impact.
Currently Zimbabwe exports raw platinum to South Africa for further processing.
