Harare - Zimbabwe’s trade deficit with South Africa for the four months to April was at US$529.6m, official figures have shown.
According to statistics made available by ZimStat, Zimbabwe’s imports from SA were worth $1.273bn while exports were worth $743.7m.
Overall Zimbabwe’s trade deficit for the period widened to $1.6bn as local industry continues to struggle to meet demands of a consuming economy.
In the four-month period, imports amounted to $2.62bn and exports totalled $1.02bn. Imports were mainly skewed towards motor vehicle and accessories as well as foodstuffs including milk products.
In the period, the country imported diesel worth $266.02m, while a significant amount went to fabric, including underwear, following the collapse of the local cotton and textile sector.
Exports were made up mainly of minerals which included $177m worth of gold, $45m of unworked platinum and $101m of nickel concentrate.
