Harare - The Zimbabwean government has resolved to begin auctioning diamonds mined in Chiadzwa in the second half of this year.
It is part of measures to realise huge profits from the sale of the precious stones, which are presently being exported in raw form.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa said after meeting mining companies over the weekend that the country would, after drawing lessons from Antwerp auctions, set up a similar system.
Chidhakwa said the initiative would also ensure the beneficiation of the diamonds, according to the state owned Sunday Mail.
Zimbabwe has so far held two diamond auctions sales in Antwerp.
The sale of Marange diamonds in Antwerp followed the removal of European Union sanctions on the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation and a culmination of high-level meetings between Zimbabwean officials and Antwerp World Diamond Centre, both in Harare and Antwerp.
The first tender in Antwerp achieved total sales value of $10.7m after the sale of 279 723 carats.
The second Antwerp tender was expected to sell at least half a million diamond carats worth approximately $37m.
