Johannesburg - Absenteeism is down 30% in SA, saving local business R120m a year, a statistical software company said on Wednesday.
A sample of more than 170 000 employees showed that absenteeism had decreased in the last year "by 30%, bringing down the average cost of absenteeism by R120m," said Angela Graham, spokesperson for statistical software company Absenteeism Management Solutions(CAMS).
"In 2006...each employee took an average of 5.7 days per year. In the 2007 cycle...every employee took an average of 4.1 absenteeism days," she said.
Graham quoted CAMS chief executive Johnny Johnson as saying
absenteeism is "in all probability the single biggest cause of lost time and poor productivity.
"Last year, (2007) we calculated that across the economy it is probable that the minimum cost of absenteeism measured as a direct cost was about R19bn" she said.
"Even though sick leave is sometimes abused..."there is good news regarding SA; we might have our fair share of challenges in this country but we are not getting as sick as we did in 2006."
