Who will be the next AG?

Cape Town - Deputy auditor general Kimi Makwetu topped the list of preferred candidates to take over from his boss Terence Nombembe, it was revealed on Tuesday.

A parliamentary ad hoc committee established to process the nomination of a candidate for the position of auditor general agreed to a shortlist of six names on Tuesday.

A total of 90 applications for the position were received but only six qualified in terms of the job requirements.

Senior parliamentary official Nonkosi Cetshwayo explained that many of the CVs received were from people without the necessary skills for the position.

"We received CVs from a whole lot of people, ranging from [people with] matric [only], labourers, welders, and the like," Cetshwayo said.

She and her team had used criteria stipulated in the advertisement for the job to select the six shortlisted.

"In the advert the requirement is that the candidate should be a chartered accountant or be in possession of an equivalent qualification," she said.

Order of preference

It was also confirmed that the shortlist was drawn up in order of preference, in terms of suitability for the position.

Makwetu's name was followed by those of Zaitun Bee Gaffair Shaik, Lily Zondo, Kaushic Patel, Josephine Naicker, and Avhashoni Ramikosi.

The candidates are all chartered accountants who previously held positions in the AG's office, auditing firms, state-owned entities, government, or other private companies.

MPs will start interviewing the candidates next week on Wednesday.

A draft scorecard was drawn up so MPs could rate the candidates according to, among others, their technical expertise and leadership abilities.

The Democratic Alliance insisted that the impartiality of the candidates also be tested, as this was crucial to the job of auditing public funds.

"This person must be a strong person regarding accounting... but I think essentially the ability to be independent and interact with others is paramount," DA MP Dion George said.

The committee has been given until September 20 to make their recommendation to the National Assembly.

If the Assembly gave the green light, a recommendation would be made to President Jacob Zuma to appoint Nombembe's successor.

Nombembe's term expires at the end of November.
