Whites still earn the most – SAIRR

2011-02-01 11:27

Johannesburg - The average income of whites is nearly eight times higher than that of blacks, the SA Institute of Race Relations said on Tuesday.

"White per capita personal income in 2008 was 7.7 times higher than that of Africans," the institute said in its latest South Africa Survey.

In the same year it was 4.5 times higher than that of Coloureds, and 1.5 times higher than that of Indians.

In 1970 whites were earning 15 times as much as blacks, while in 1917 it was 11 times higher.

The data from the Institute for Futures Research at the University of Stellenbosch shows the ratio of white income to Coloured income is the same as it was in 1917.

The per capita income of Indians and Coloureds was the same in 1917.

However, since then Indian income has grown at a higher rate than that of any other race group.

"‘These trends are confirmed by data we have from other sources in the survey," said Lucy Holborn of the institute's research department.

At constant 2000 prices, between 1993 and 2008 white per capita income rose from R46 486 to R75 297.

That of Indians rose from R19 537 to R51 457. Coloured people went from R12 911 to R16 567, while income for blacks rose from R5 073 to R9 790.

"While average incomes still reflect the disparities between race groups that existed during apartheid and before, we are beginning to see a narrowing of these differences," said Holborn.

Are these stats based on 'employed per capita', or merely based on the population of the country? Hopefully there is a bit of intelligence that has been applied...

  • Solo - 2011-02-01 11:38

If whites get paid 8 times more, then they must be contribting to about 80% - 90% of the personal tax income in SA?

  • niel_dino - 2011-02-01 11:53

These numbers may show disparity but who pays the most income tax in the country. Take that tax out the equation and see what the take home pay is! Thereafter, add the returns the mostly Black politicians generate through their corrupt dealings and tell me who takes home more. There was also the article on here recently about the number of homes owned by the Blacks of the country and how the vast majority are bond-free. PS - Please don't anyone come and tell me about the difference in affluence of the people with all these articles as they quesion those on record and the banks and deeds offices and don't delve too deeply in the townships.

I'm white and I am an African. The SAIR is insulting SA whites, coloureds, Indians by not calling them Africans. As if Africa only belongs to black people. There are others that live in Egypt / Morocco / Tunisia, Libya that aren't black. This institution that promotes racial division should be closed down permanently. They write controversial pieces to gain funding and attract attention and to sow division.

Could it perharps be due to the fact that whites received better education in the past and thus is capable of proper tertiary education? In the future this picture shall change drastically since the number of black university students have increased significantly. Now the only problem is to get the percentage first years that actually graduate to also increase and thus be eligible for better salaries.

  • whothere - 2011-02-01 12:19

Please factor in an education to these figures, if you can only work a spade then an increase from R5073 to R9790 is excellent (almost double) If you can run a company/municipality without being CORRUPT you are sure to join the top rank. (well like that’s ever gonna happen)

I cannot believe that after all these years, Mandela's reign, the Soccer World Cup, lower pass rates for scholars, easier exam papers, no discipline in schools and a free education for "black", as you call them, students that this is so. Maybe its because us "whites", as you call us, have to work twice as hard to study, pass at a higher standard and work longer hours to get and keep a job that will not be given to another person because of skin colour. I really thought that we had passed all this and that after all these years the only CRUTCH that is still used today is that of the race card. Poor us.

Please read this and then read the following link: http://www.fin24.com/Economy/Maths-decline-a-threat-to-accounting-20110201 So who accurate are these? Or is this put out to create politcal debates seeing they cant carry on the way they are....

How can this study actually hit the news stands??? There are huge errors in this study and yet they publish it. How can you compare races??? How is that in any way a study of who earns more?? Perhaps they should try studing races who are currently in the same occupation!!!!! You cannot simply state these assumptions. Rather compare occupations and the look at the race card within those occupations. An extremely biased study!! Worthless in real research

  • DeeCS - 2011-02-01 13:04

Well considering the disproportionate amount of tax that whites pay compared to blacks its only natural they should be earning more.

  • Nxuba - 2011-02-01 13:05

Truth hurts! The apartheid system was designed to baby sit whites and to humiliate blacks. This article reveals the injustices of the past and realities of today. Job preservation and the colour bar act came into existence to preserve white domination and to make sure that whites enjoy better economic benefits.

  • Anon - 2011-02-01 13:24

These stats are clearly based on per capita... not really comparing like with like in professions... These are totally useless stats without considering like for like comparisons in professional earnings...

  • Ostie - 2011-02-01 13:29

Stats will always favour the person presenting it and their agenda.

  • sandile - 2011-02-01 13:31

True Nasdaq7. It is no longer funny anymore. I am tired of this race card in SA myself.

  • True - 2011-02-01 13:32

Together with this comes 7 times the stress, 7 times the amount of time, 7 times the amount of tax money, 7 times the amount of people employed. These stats are bs and aimed at rising tension.

  • @Nxuba - 2011-02-01 13:35

Dont worry brother...we may earn 7.7 times more but we paying the taxes to support 14m people on social grants.

  • Jay - 2011-02-01 13:41

How would 'whites' be able to be 'earning' the most? With limitations like AA and EE I cannot see how this would be! Except - if people have become selfemployed with say a CC and setup their own small businesses. Then possibly yes. It is common knowledge now that most employers outsource to contractors for various reasons. This trend will escalate due to basic economic realities. The most resourceful, efficient and economically viable will end up as the most sought after contractors doing the work normally done by specialists and professionals who are blocked in finding employment in industry. Every action has a direct consequence. Shalom

  • joe_public - 2011-02-01 13:43

Shit article. Consider that people are promoted primarily on skill, experience and knowledge. Even if BEE is pushing incompetents into positions, there is no need to pay them more to retain them because it wouldn't *really* be a loss to the company if they went. On the other hand you probably have whites who have 30+ years experience and the skills and knowledge to back it up so they are running companies and would be a loss to the company so they are paid good money to retain them. It's great that blacks have the paperwork now to get into jobs but whether they are BEE or not, the question to still ask is what are they contributing that should be worth so much that they should be paid more? At the end of the day, economics needs to rule the workplace. If your skills are in demand and rare you get paid more. If you have unique knowledge that can add value to your company you get paid more. You do NOT get paid more by virtue of having a piece of paper that says you have a degree but then you sit on your lazy ass expecting good money for showing up at work.

  • Flabbio - 2011-02-01 13:55

Shame, these guys are confused. First of all they publish stats claiming State salaries to be 44% higher than private sector salaries and then they publish nonsense like this: whites earning on average 8 times more than blacks??? Is it me or is something looking funny here??? How's that possible? Can't earn 8 times more on salary that's supposedly 44% lower than a State employee (State employees being predominantly black).

  • black african - 2011-02-01 14:12

The ANC sold the black soul to these white people. We want economic freedom in our life time. For as long as the ANC is controlled by white interests more than its own constituency, these inequalities will always prevail.

  • Piet Strydom - 2011-02-01 14:16

Now I wonder, how does the per capita qualification level stack up? As they say: "Lies, damn lies, and statistics. Always EXTREMELY important to isolate whether two pieces of data move in the same direction because one causes the other, or whether both of them are driven by some other factor, or whether it is just co-incidence.

  • Sipho - 2011-02-01 14:42

This indicates how ignorant and useless the ANC is.

  • A - 2011-02-01 16:35

to the author- perhaps an apples and apples comparison next time covering Experience , Age Education, even Sector etc. Not judging but perhaps more facts as opposed to the sensationalized view

  • The_VIro - 2011-02-01 16:44

Solo, your maths totally warped, you can't make that assumption at all without knowing how many blacks/whites there are, and also, coloureds and Indians also contribute to this economy... so no, what you are saying is incorrect...TOTALLY
