Water shortages by 2025

Municipalities owe water boards R2.2bn

Johannesburg - Port Elizabeth car wash businesses were urged on Friday to shut down until damaged water pipes were repaired, the municipality said.

Two pipes bringing water from the Churchill and Impofu dams to city reservoirs were washed away during flooding near the Van Stadens River resort, spokesperson Kupido Baron said in a statement.

He said these pipelines supply a third of the city's water.

"We urgently call upon owners of carwashes in Central, Deal Party, Summerstrand, Charlo, Newton Park, Walmer, Humewood, North End, Korsten, Mount Pleasant, Lovemore Park, Lovemore Heights, Algoa Park, Struandale, Gelvandale, Gelvan Park and parts of New Brighton and KwaZakhele to consider closing their businesses until water supply return(s) to normal in the city."

Water from two other dams, Loerie and Nooitgedagt (Gariep), was being diverted to limit the number of areas affected.
