Warning about uncertified appliances

Dec 04 2012 17:06

Cape Town - Electrical appliances which are not certified by the SA Bureau of Standards (SABS) pose a serious threat to consumers' lives, Parliament's energy portfolio committee warned on Tuesday.

"This follows shocking revelations by the SABS that there are tons of locally and internationally manufactured products which do not conform to the prescribed quality national standards," it said in a statement.

During recent oversight visits in Gauteng, committee members were told by SABS CEO Boni Mehlomakulu that some state institutions, including certain municipalities, "continued to procure and utilise some products that were untested for standards compliance".

The committee said the production and trading of electricity appliances by some manufactures without the SABS certification was "a serious threat to the economy and consumers' lives".
