Johannesburg - Conciliation in the wage dispute between the SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) and the SA Local Government Association (Salga) was postponed on Thursday, the union said.
"The conciliation of the wage dispute in the local government sector set for today in Pretoria was postponed to June 1," said spokesperson Tahir Sema.
Samwu had called for the reopening of wage negotiations with Salga when average inflation fell below 5% for the previous year, he said.
"The three-year agreement required parties to reopen negotiations, but Salga raised a technical objection to the conciliation taking place.
"They argued that the agreement required inflation to be averaged over the two previous years."
Sema said the conciliator had dismissed Salga's objection to the presence of legal practitioners when hearing a legal objection.
"Salga then claimed that they were not adequately represented and wanted to appoint attorneys to present their case." The wage agreement was to be implemented on July 1.
Salga was not immediately available for comment.
