Johannesburg - Demands for the reinstatement of suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi undermine its internal processes, the trade union federation said on Tuesday.
"Cosatu will not allow that to happen," said acting general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali.
He said Vavi had been suspended for violating Cosatu's code of conduct.
"The general secretary is not above the law of Cosatu. He, like anyone else, has a responsibility to come before the disciplinary process and clear his name."
He said Vavi had gone public and admitted to having violated the code of conduct.
"He made these admissions freely and voluntarily, when he was in his sound and sober senses, without being unduly influenced."
Ntshalintshali said an investigation was conducted, and that charges were formulated based on the finding of the investigation.
Vavi was suspended last year following revelations of an improper sexual relationship with a junior staffer. He also stands accused of a raft of allegations relating to the sale of Cosatu’s old headquarters and the purchase of its new building.
Ntshalintshali said the federation had received various allegations that Vavi was sowing divisions inside various affiliates, deploying people to boo and insult Cosatu leadership, which were directed at de-campaigning the ANC against the decision of the federation.
"If these are true we call on him to stop such activities. That is the most decent thing the comrade can do under the circumstances."
He said Cosatu activities had been disrupted in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
