Johannesburg - Suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said he was not ready to be part of an opposition party but did not rule out the possibility, the Sunday Times reported.
Vavi said there was an urgent need for the Congress of SA Trade Unions to safeguard the "democratic revolution", which was being threatened by the ANC's "slide towards the right.
"For now, we must contest the ANC as the left, and see where we go," Vavi was quoted as saying.
"Because Cosatu is so divided, so paralysed, it can never stop it, and that is a big concern. We need a Cosatu that is able to stop this slide towards the right in government policies."

Vavi said he would not join Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters and declined to say whether he would campaign for the ANC at next year's election.
He was placed on special leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing into an affair he had with a junior employee.
Vavi has launched a court bid to have his suspension declared unlawful.
The case was due to be heard this week.
