Union welcomes Zuma nod to post office probe

Johannesburg - The Communication Workers' Union on Thursday welcomed the proclamation signed by President Jacob Zuma directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate alleged irregularities at the SA Post Office (Sapo).

"We call on Sapo officials and in particular our members to co-operate with the SIU [Special Investigating Unit] to ensure a speedy conclusion of this long overdue investigation," spokesperson Matankana Mothapo said in a statement on Thursday.

"CWU welcomes this move as we have for some time been raising this."

On Wednesday, presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said the SIU was directed to probe alleged serious maladministration, improper conduct by Sapo officials, and unlawful appropriation or spending of public money.

Other allegations to be probed included malpractice, damage to public property, management of immovable property, and loans granted to the Courier and Freight Group (Pty) Limited.
