Johannesburg - The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) said on Thursday it was organising a protest march on Saturday to demonstrate its opposition to the proposed electronic toll roads in Gauteng.
It said that it had held a meeting with Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi, who had invited the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) to provide more information on the tolls.
"The explanation given is indicative that the community and/or consumer will have to dig more into their pockets for transport," Satawu said.
"It seems the reason for this tolling, however, is not to benefit the motorist, but rather to benefit the toll gate system in Gauteng, ensuring that nobody gets a free ride," it said.
Satawu said it was convinced that the tolls would have "a massive effect on the lives of the working class and poor."
"Satawu Gauteng rejects the implementation of this new toll gate system. Already we have a crisis of high food, petrol and electricity prices, which impacts negatively on working class households," it said.
