Union declares wage dispute

Johannesburg - Coal sector wage talks stalled on Monday when Solidarity declared a dispute with the Chamber of Mines, the trade union said.

"The dispute will be referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration for facilitation and the first dispute meeting will take place shortly," general secretary Gideon du Plessis said in a statement.

He said the chamber presented a revised offer of a 7% wage increase, with a 7% housing allowance increase.

The chamber could not immediately be reached for comment.

Du Plessis said Solidarity had asked that the housing allowances for all workers in the sector be brought into line with the allowance offered by Anglo American Thermal Coal, which offered the highest.

"The dispute regarding the inequalities in the housing allowance has already been dragging on for eight years and must be resolved during this round of negotiations.

"Solidarity indicated that a revised offer that is in line with workers' inflation burden must be made and that an additional increase must be offered as compensation for the housing inequalities."
