Cape Town - The implementation date of a youth employment subsidy will depend on agreement and approval within government on its design, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Friday.

He was replying in writing to a parliamentary question by Dion George of the Democratic Alliance, who wanted to know whether a policy had been implemented regarding implementation of a subsidy to employers to lower the cost of hiring young people without work experience.

Gordhan said no youth employment subsidy had yet been implemented. It was still under discussion in government.

There would also be discussions with other stakeholders on the question of youth employment, he said.

The youth employment subsidy proposal in the budget earlier this year stated that the subsidy was intended to be implemented so that young people would begin benefiting from the initiative by early 2011.

"The implementation date of a youth employment subsidy will depend on agreement and approval within government regarding the design of the subsidy including who will be eligible, the value and duration of the subsidy, its fiscal cost and relevant legislative matters," Gordhan said.
