Cape Town - For the medium term to 2012-2013, the department of public works has asked for an additional R2bn to spend on upgrading and enlarging the Cape Town parliamentary complex.
This prompted Democratic Alliance standing budget committee member Marius Swart to ask what would happen if parliament was moved from Cape Town to Pretoria, in a "cost-saving exercise", as Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe mooted in parliament last week. Great consternation ensued.
Cathy Motsisi, financial executive at the department of public works, had been unaware of the proposal. "Should something like this be decided, however, we would have to review our request."
Committee chairperson Mshiyeni Sogoni (ANC) said it had been raised by Motlanthe only as a suggestion.
