Johannesburg - Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba announced on Thursday that Transnet had awarded a contract valued at R15.5bn to nine companies to cover the parastatal's fuel requirements.
He said: "This day will go down in history as the day black economic empowerment took a giant leap forward.
"Today we are proud to announce that Transnet has awarded [the contract]... over the next five years to black- and women-owned companies."
Gigaba said eight of the companies were 100% black-owned.
They would be responsible for Transnet's fuel requirements for the next five years.
