Johannesburg - Trade conditions as reflected by the trade activity index  of the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) indicated that positive conditions continued in March.

The index was at 54 in March, two points lower than the index for February and also two points below the March 2010 level.

However, it was 16 points above the depressed March 2009 level.

The sales volumes index was at 61 after February's level of 62. All the other trade activity components, except for employment, maintained their gains in March 2011.

The price indices of current sales and input prices increased further, pointing to inflationary pressures, Sacci said. The input price index rose by another 4 points in March 2011 after rising by 4 points in February 2011, while the sales price index rose by 2 points further to the 3 points increase of February 2011.

The Trade Expectations Index stayed in positive territory at 63 - sliding by 2 points from February to March.

The index on employment conditions fell into negative territory from 51 in February to 47. The employment prospects index registered 53 - remaining in positive territory in March 2011.
