The City of Cape Town has spent R175m running the Myciti bus service since the Soccer World Cup compared to an income of R35m, a report says.
Pretoria - The average monthly total income in the accommodation industry between September 2004 and January 2005 was R963.9m, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday.
"Most of the income was derived from accommodation, which contributed R639.6m, followed by income from restaurant and bar sales which contributed R240.8m, and other income which contributed R83.4m," said Stats SA tourism manager Itane Magwaba.
He was speaking in Pretoria at the release of the new tourist accommodation figures.
The other income referred to included rentals and fees received for transport services, offices, shops, garages, billiard rooms, dance floors, laundry services, telephones, and faxes.
Magwaba said the highest number of "stay-unit nights" were sold in December 2004. He said this was mainly because of an increase in sales at caravan parks, camping sites and bed and breakfast places.
