The City of Cape Town has spent R175m running the Myciti bus service since the Soccer World Cup compared to an income of R35m, a report says.
The British and Irish Lions tour earlier this year gave the South African tourism sector a major boost.
A study commissioned by SA Rugby found that the six-week tour had added R1.5bn-odd to our gross domestic product (GDP).
The average supporter spent R44 622 in the country over a 16-day visit.
The tourism sector is smiling from ear to ear thanks to this bonanza, which boosted the national tourism GDP by 9%-odd. It was the perfect product at the right time in a very difficult year, said Michael Tatalias, chief executive of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association.
He viewed this sort of contribution to have been made possible by the nature of the product and the demography of the average British and Irish Lions supporter.
Only the World Cup rugby tournament is bigger than the Lions tour in terms of scale and attraction, declared Andy Marinos, acting managing director of SA Rugby.
The tour drew 37 000 British and Irish tourists.
