Cape Town - Tim Harris, shadow minister of finance of the Democratic Alliance, has just been appointed as head of investments for the City of Cape Town.
His appointment follows the DA's clinching control of the Western Cape again in the recent National elections. The DA won 57.26% of the vote in the Western Cape, with the ANC and the EFF taking 34% and 2.32% respectively. The rest of the vote was fragmented among the ACDP, VF Plus, Cope and UDM.
As head of investments Harris will be among others responsible to position the Western Cape as investment destination of choice.
De Lille, the City's executive mayor, said Harris will focus on driving job creation and investment in Cape Town and will work to align the programmes of the City’s Economic Development Department, the Western Cape Government, Wesgro, and the Economic Development Partnership.
"Together with key departments in the administration, Tim will enhance the implementation of the City’s Economic Growth Strategy and our expanded investment incentive policy, and will work to fully realise our vision of Cape Town as an opportunity city," she said in a speech announcing the appointment.
Harris said in a tweet on Wednesday that he is very honoured to join Patricia de Lille's team as head of investments.
As shadow minister of finance, Harris has led the process of developing the DA’s policy package to deliver growth and jobs.
"He will now be focused on implementing many of these policy ideas in government and will play a central role in ensuring that our city fulfills its economic potential," said De Lille.
With two years to go until the local government election in 2016, De Lille said the party is committed to extending Cape Town’s lead as South Africa’s premier investment destination.
