Johannesburg - The long-term sustainability of the taxi industry in Gauteng will be the topic of a summit in May, transport MEC Ismail Vadi said on Wednesday.
"The taxi industry is central to an integrated public transport system in our province and we have a collective responsibility to ensure that it is better managed, properly regulated and economically viable," he said in a speech prepared for delivery in Johannesburg.
Speaking at the opening of a new public transport licensing and registration office, Vadi said there was a need for organisational unity to keep the industry viable in the future.
There were 185 registered taxi associations in Gauteng, which made it difficult to obtain coherence and a common voice on issues affecting the industry.
The May summit was aimed at aiding the design of a 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan for Gauteng, which the department of roads and transport would release later in the year.
The Gauteng City-Region Observatory recently conducted a study, which found that 42% of Gauteng commuters relied on minibus taxis for travelling to work and school, as well as to other recreational activities.
