Cape Town - The Labour Court in Johannesburg on Friday granted an interdict ordering transport labour unions’ striking members to stop them from causing any act of violence, vandalism or intimidation.
The Road Freight Employers Association (RFEA) approached the court to order the striking freight and truck workers to refrain from violence after various incidents were reported nationwide.
Strikers have torched trucks, thrown objects at traffic, while working drivers have also been attacked this week.
The unions have been ordered to "issue public statements to the media, calling on members to desist from any unlawful or criminal conduct forthwith".
The Transport and Allied Workers Union, the Motor Transport Workers Union, the Professional Transport and Allied Workers Union of South Africa, and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union have been striking for a 12% across-the-board wage increase, while theRFEA has been offering 6%.
