Stop talking, get on with it: Gordhan

Johannesburg - The government's job targets are "very clear", but achieving them will be the challenge, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan during an I-Net Bridge/BusinessLIVE function on Monday.

The government announced in its new growth path, currently under discussion, that it planned to create about five million jobs over a ten-year period.

"How do you match execution to strategy?" asked Gordhan.

President Jacob Zuma would soon meet the private sector for a jobs summit, which the finance minister said should include discussions about transformation in the local economy.

The minister, however, called for more implementation.

"Can we just stop talking and get on with doing things?" he asked.

He said private sector employers and the government should be "single-minded" on the economy, job creation and transformation.

Gordhan also said that the global economic recovery was still characterised by many imbalances.

He said there were shifts in the way global trade was conducted, with the prominence of China and India.

There were also imbalances in terms of growth, production and consumption that were still unresolved, Gordhan added.

Global developments were highlighted by the panel as important in determining the sustainability of global growth.

Political unrest in some Middle East regions, more recently Libya, have seen commodity prices - including oil - rising significantly and posing inflation risks.

"We aren't sufficiently grasping that geopolitics plays an important role," Gordhan said.

The minister added that "structural issues" in the global economy would result in some kind of tremor every now and then.

According to Gordhan, tremors were going to be there and elements of uncertainty would continue to be experienced.

SA would have to adopt strategies that allowed the country to survive the crises, the minister said.
