Johannesburg - About 156 000 fieldworkers will be hired during a recruitment drive for the 2011 census, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Monday.
"The recruitment for fieldwork positions - 6 000 census fieldwork coordinators, 30 000 supervisors and 120 000 fieldworkers - forms part of the final preparations in undertaking the biggest census South Africa has seen," it said.
The national statistical office will use the normal recruitment process of advertising in newspapers.
The first phase of recruitment started last year, when prospective candidates were invited to apply to be included on the Census 2011 database.
A total of 161 000 people had been captured on the database, Stats SA said.
It was looking at the geographical concentration of the applicants.
The recruitment drive was aimed at communities to ensure that census fieldworkers lived in the areas they will be counting come October 10.
Project director for the census Calvin Molongoana said: "Stats SA promotes a recruitment drive at local level, in line with ensuring that fieldworkers enumerate their own localities.
"These (application) forms are available countrywide in all our offices. We will also be making the forms available in community centres around the country."
He said the forms would be clearly marked "not for sale". This precaution is to ensure that people won't be taken advantage of.
