Cape Town - The government has not managed to meet its targets in rolling out solar water heaters.
Minister of Energy Dipuo Peters has said that to date 115 000 solar water heaters have been installed by the government.
“This is 57.5% of the target of 200 000 per the set goal in the departmental strategy for the 2010/11 financial year,” she said in a reply to a parliamentary question released on Wednesday.
She said the target was missed “due to financial constraints”.
The solar water heater programme began in the 2010/11 financial year and is financed by a combination of a National Treasury
allocation and an electricity tariff rebate.
The departement of energy has set a target of 1 million solar geysers to be installed by 2013, hoping this will help Eskom by reducing electricity demand by 3 000 MW.
