Johannesburg - The procurement of renewable independent power producers (IPP) will create jobs in rural areas, energy department director general Nelisiwe Magubane said on Wednesday.
Most renewable independent power producers would be in rural areas, where there was limited economic activity, she told reporters in Midrand.
"According to the Electricity Regulation Act, the energy minister determined that 3 725 megawatts of energy from renewable sources is needed in South Africa."
Magubane said the IPP procurement programme is intended to promote sustainable growth, job creation and the renewable energy industry.
