Stage 2 load shedding in progress

Update 08:07

Cape Town - Eskom has started implementing stage 2 load shedding from 08:00 on Friday, which is likely to continue until 22:00 this evening.

This is due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are currently on unplanned outages due to technical faults. Furthermore, units that were expected to come back on line after maintenance have delayed and among them Koeberg’s Unit 1, it said in a statement.

Update 06:30

Friday's stage 2 load shedding follows a move to stage 3 load shedding on Thursday afternoon due to a further shortage of generation capacity as additional units have had to be taken out of service for unplanned maintenance caused by technical faults.

However, Eskom said it would only load shed as much as was necessary, indicating that some people might not have felt the affects of that schedule.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe acknowledged that Thursday's load shedding was the worst since the Majuba silo collapsed at the start of November, 2014, which was the last time South Africa had stage 3 load shedding.

“In total we have over 87 units within the Eskom fleet, [and] many of those units in all 27 power stations are not working optimally at this stage," he told Fin24. "It’s almost all our power stations [that] are experiencing all sorts of problems at this stage."

“Our engineers are still confident that Koeberg’s unit 1 will be synchronised [on Thursday],” he said.

In its update on Friday Eskom said Unit 1 of the Koeberg power station, which was taken out of service due to a technical fault on the main generator transformer, was undergoing start-up tests required for synchronisation after the fault on the generator was resolved and is expected to return to service this evening.

"We expect the unit to be back at full capacity later in the week as it does take some time to ramp it up."

Eskom customers can check load shedding schedules on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za) or contact the customer call centre 0860 037 566. Municipal customers are urged to contact their local authorities.
