Squabbles over Gadaffi loot continue

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance on Tuesday said it will not accede to a request by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) for more time to furnish the party with documents related to the so-called Gaddafi billions.

DA MP Tim Harris made an application to the FIC under the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), requesting the documents.

"The FIC had previously informed me that it would respond to my request, of June 28 2013, within 30 working days. The deadline for that response expired yesterday," Harris said.

The FIC had requested an extension of the deadline due to the unavailability of certain staff members.

"I do not believe that such an extension is warranted given that all that is required is a simple decision to avail the documents to the DA and the public in terms of our PAIA application. I have therefore submitted an appeal today," he said.

Harris' statement comes after reports that the United Nations had approached former ANC security chief, Tito Maleka for help to trace the money.

"Numerous reports have indicated that billions of dollars’ worth of assets from the regime of former Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi may have been hidden in South Africa."
