Madrid - Spain's unemployment rate increased in the first quarter of 2014, data released on Tuesday by statistics office INE showed.
The jobless rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 25.9% in the three months ending in March.
The number of people out of work rose by 2 300 to reach 5.9 million. Spain has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the European Union.
Despite the quarter-on-quarter rise, the overall number of unemployed people has dropped by nearly 345 000 in relation to the same period in 2013.
Despite the rise in unemployment, Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro welcomed the figures, which he said were a further sign that Spain is emerging from a protracted economic crisis.
