Mpuma farms get foothold into Oman's market

Mbombela -   Four Mpumalanga Communal Property Associations have been identified to trade their produce in the Sultanate of Oman.

This follows a three-day visit by a delegation from the Middle Eastern country to Mpumalanga.

Premier David Mabuza's spokesperson Zibonele Mncwango said: "With regards to key agricultural investment areas, the delegation identified for their investors the readily available communal property association farms acquired through the government’s land reform programme."

The farms include Coromandel in Mashishing, which produces wheat and specialises in agri-tourism and other areas include the Giba farm in Hazyview, which produces bananas and vegetables, as well as the Ndwandwe Trust in Badplaas, which focus on potatoes and citrus and the Champaigne farm in Bushbuckridge, where citrus and vegetables are harvested.

Wholesalers

Mncwango said a five-member delegation met government departments, provincial public entities, local farmers and delegates also visited a number of agricultural projects throughout the province.

He said after touring the province the delegation, led by Oman’s under secretary for agriculture and fisheries wealth Dr Ishaq Ahmed Mohamed Al-Roqishi, was keen to instigate formal relations between the two provinces after reporting back to their superiors.

“Oman sees investment possibilities in these farms in production, processing, packaging, transportation and other logistics in importing produce to their country.

“The envisaged Mpumalanga Fresh Produce Market will have investment opportunities for the retailers, wholesalers and distributors.

"The entry gate to the Middle East and Far East markets will be through the ports of Sohar and Salalah while utilising the Maputo Harbour for shipping purposes,” Mncwango said.

He added that the delegation also visited the Karan Beef plant in Balfour, which is the largest producer of beef in South Africa and the continent. The company also complies with halaal requirements.

Other areas of cooperation will include exchange programmes on veterinary services, agriculture researchers and extension officers, a direct airline to Oman and environmental management issues.

Premier Mabuza suggested that a permanent team be established to start working on the trade partnership.

Dr Al-Roqishi said: “We hope our investors will be easily attracted to come and invest in Mpumalanga. Our first job is to submit a report to our minister of agriculture. We hope to return with investors very soon.”
