Solidarity makes paper sector wage deal

Johannesburg - Trade union Solidarity has agreed to an 8% wage increase with employers in the paper and pulp sector and will sign the agreement soon, it said on Monday.

The increase will be effective from July 1, the union said.

“All the trade unions in these industries have not accepted the wage offer of 8% yet, and Solidarity therefore reached an agreement with the employers concerned that any improved offers will also be implemented for Solidarity members,” it said.

Companies in the sector include Mondi [JSE:MND] and Sappi [JSE:SAP].

Members of the bigger Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union went on strike in the paper industry late last week, demanding a 13% wage hike.
