Cape Town - The Soccer World Cup affected the number of visitors to the Castle of Good Hope last year, cutting into its profits.
Arguably SA's oldest building, it had 126 769 visitors in the 12 months to December 2010, according to its annual report tabled in Parliament.
This was less than the 130 716 visitors in 2009 and is as a result of fewer school tours due to extended holidays during the Soccer World Cup.
The monument, on which construction started in 1665, reported a net profit of R893 000 for the year. This was a 25% drop from the R1.1 million profit in 2009.
Due to a lack of dedicated capital project funding, the board continued with preventative maintenance work and spent R207 000 on day-to day maintenance at the Castle.
The monument falls under the control of the department of defence and military veterans.
