Johannesburg - Talk in the corridors of the Mining for Change conference in Sandton on Monday morning centred on the possible exit of Mines Minister
Susan Shabangu from the resources portfolio.
Shabangu was to have delivered the keynote speech at the conference but cancelled her plans one business day before the start of the conference.
"Owing to unforeseen events, the minister confirmed last Friday that she would not be able to honour the conference with her participation as the keynote speaker," conference chair Nchakha Moloi said during the opening.
But rumours of Shabangu's impending exit from the portfolio were cited by delegates as the possible reason behind her absence.
Speculation of her move - possibly to another portfolio - surfaced last month after the ministry came under fire for the reputational damage caused by the awarding of prospecting rights over existing mines to third parties.
