Pretoria - A search for people with scarce skills and the urgent training of those without was announced by deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in Pretoria on Monday.

The Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (Jipsa) is a programme which will address the shortage of skilled labour as identified by the Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (Asgisa).

Mlambo-Ngcuka said Jipsa would bring volunteers, retirers and people with other skills into the programme.

She said Jipsa would seek ways of using unemployed graduates and give training to artisans and people with technical skills as well.

"Our quest to be a competitive economy and a winning nation depends on us equipping ourselves appropriately," she said.

Mlambo-Ngcuka said she would like to see "tangible" results within 18 months.
