Satawu threatens to strike

Johannesburg - The SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) has threatened to go on strike over stalled labour negotiations with transport company Autopax.

"The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration has called us in this morning (Thursday) try to break the deadlock. If the talks fail, the protected strike action will start tomorrow (Friday)," national sector coordinator Assaria Mataboge said on Thursday.

He said members were unhappy about double drivers who were used to operate long-distance trips, but not paid for all the hours they had worked, or overtime.

The commission had given an advisory award suggesting employees be paid four hours overtime per trip when two drivers were needed. It also suggested the parties agree on an allowance for all long-distance trips.

"We have tried to engage with the company since September 2011, but no positive results were yielded. We therefore call upon all Satawu members to fully engage Autopax so as to exert pressure to them," said Mataboge.
