Johannesburg – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) said on Friday that it has so far received a total of 2.275 million tax returns since the tax season opened on the first of July.
The deadline for manual submissions was the 30th of September. SARS continues to accept tax returns submitted on eFiling and what is referred to as Branch Front End (BFE) will still be accepted. BFE is an electronic means where SARS captures the return of the taxpayer electronically on their behalf.
"Of the total 2.2 million returns received, 95 SARS officials were able to capture 54 429 tax returns through the SARS Outreach programme by having 1 458 service points available at shopping centres," SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay said.
Some 26 318 new taxpayers have been registered while 15 553 new users were seen in eFiling.
Lackay said that billions of rand had been paid back to taxpayers in the course of the 2010 financial year.
"Income tax, individuals companies and STC, 2.11 million refunds with a total value of R25bn. On VAT, 756 460 refunds were made with a total value of R117bn," Lackay concluded.
