Sars employees sentenced for fraud

Johannesburg - Two former SA Revenue Service (Sars) employees were each sentenced by two separate courts for defrauding the revenue collector, it said on Tuesday.

Senzeni Bareng was given a six-year suspended sentence by the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court.

Bareng was found guilty on three counts of fraud and was ordered by the court on August 5 to pay back R120 000 plus interest over a period of five years.

Bareng stole R280 000 in income tax refunds meant for beneficiaries by changing their banking details.

The monies were then deposited into his own account, said Sars spokesperson Marika Muller.

"He had not withdrawn the rest of the fraudulent refunds from his account when he was arrested."

Another former employee, Thalita Skei, was sentenced by the Upington Magistrate's Court for submitting fraudulent travel claims.

On August 6, the court fined her R3 000 or 18 months imprisonment suspended for five years.

"She had submitted fraudulent travel plans in order to claim travel and subsistence allowances to which she was not entitled. She resigned from Sars in June 2011 while facing an internal disciplinary hearing."
