Sars refunds to taxpayers already at R6bn

Cape Town - Over two million tax returns have been submitted since the annual tax season opened last month, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Marika Muller said just under half of these were filed electronically at branches, and the other half via eFiling. A negligible amount were submitted in manual paper form.

Tax returns in the same period last year were 1.84 million.

Muller said Sars had paid over a million refunds worth more than R6bn in the 45 days since tax season started.

Around 2 600 tax practitioners had registered with Sars for the first time and 10 500 existing ones had updated their details.

Manual tax returns by post or hand delivery were due by September 27. Non-provisional taxpayers, who were paid by an employer, would have until November 22.

The deadline for provisional taxpayers was January 31 next year. Provisional taxpayers get other forms of income, such as from investments, business activities, company directorships, rent or royalties.
