Johannesburg - The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) is demanding that taxi operators be issued with permits within three months to exempt them from paying for e-tolls.
Hundreds of taxi operators braved the rain on Monday to hand over a memorandum of grievances to the transport department in Pretoria.
The protest was organised by the NTA which complained that the government had failed to issue drivers with operating licences exempting them from e-tolling.
"Our drivers are getting threats from the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) that if they don't pay they would be handed over," NTA general secretary Alpheus Mlalazi said.
"We demand that taxi operators be issued with operating permits within three months."
The operators wanted the permits to be valid indefinitely. They handed the memorandum to deputy director general of public transport, Mathabatha Mokonyane.
Mokonyane promised to ensure the memorandum was handed to Transport Minister Dipuo Peters. The department would respond once the minister had read the document.
Earlier in the morning taxi operators gathered in Marabastad to march through central Pretoria to the minister's office.
