Sanral extends e-toll grace period

Johannesburg - The transport department has extended the grace period for e-toll road users to settle their accounts and benefit from the discount, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said on Wednesday.

The extension was granted on Monday to allow users to register an e-toll account and settle the discounted outstanding amounts in full, CEO Nazir Alli said in a statement.

Users would be discounted for the period of December 3 2013 to February 28, without the alternate user tariff being applied. The alternate user rate is three times the standard toll tariff.

Motorists who registered an e-toll account and paid before July 1 would only have to pay the standard toll tariff for the December to February transactions.

"We want to use this as an opportunity for road users to further familiarise themselves with the system and the options available to them."

He hoped users would take advantage of the extension to settle their accounts.

"We are doing this because we have taken note of the fact that some might have unintentionally fallen into arrears because this is a new system they are not familiar with."

Sanral has faced defiance over e-tolls in Gauteng among road users who refuse to register or pay for e-tolls in the province, in spite of threats of legal action against them.
