Sanral: E-tags compulsory

Johannesburg - The SA National Roads Association Limited (Sanral) is attempting to legally force motorists to buy an e-tag or have their driving licences taken away, according to a report on Tuesday.

Draft changes to the National Roads Act Regulations were submitted to a few parties late last week with a request that comment be received within 20 days of publication, The Star newspaper reported.

If instituted, it would give "peace officers" the power to stop cars and demand to see a driver's licence and to produce any other tag or document they were required to have.

"By implementing e-tolling and the proposed regulations through the Criminal Procedures Act, the government is promoting a very aggressive approach and tense relationship with its citizens," said Wayne Duvenage from the SA Vehicle Rental Leasing Association.

*Sanral later issued a clarification here.
