Johannesburg - The postponement of the introduction of
electronic tolling on Gauteng road is a victory for public participation, the
SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) said on Sunday.
"We view this development as a victory to public
participation. A victory to democracy and it is a positive signal towards a
democratic developmental state." said spokesperson Dumisane Mthalane.
He said Sanco would continue to mobilise and advocate for
public consultation and involvement on the issue and all other developmental
programmes.
The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) announced on
Friday that e-tolling had been placed on hold, following its meeting on
Thursday with Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.
The controversial system was due to have been implemented in
February but there was widespread criticism that it would place an unfair
burden on Gauteng road users.
"We welcome the commitment by Sanral and the minister
to address the current stakeholders concerns and issues raised in the petitions
submitted to the minister," Mthalane said.
